We grow a lot of Lupins, they're incredibly popular and flower early in the year, repeat flowering if you cut the flowering stems right to the ground. It's very easy to grow fresh stock from seeds. We bought all the popular varieties in all the best colours and then let the bees get on with it. Our current plants are several generations old and their seed will give a great range of colours. We treat them as short lived perennials here, sowing fresh seed every year to satisfy the demand for them. They are pretty much self supporting here. A martyr to slugs and the beastly lupin aphid, we protect their fresh shoots from slugs and if the fatty aphids turn up, then a high pressure water spray is very effective (and satisfying...)
